REVOLUTIONIZING SPACE TRAVEL THROUGH THE INTRODUCTION OF SPACE TOURISM

Customer Success

Seeing Earth from space is a truly profound and life-changing experience. The current space tourism approach consists of launching space tourists into orbit using self-propelled rocket ships that are expensive, risky, and expel carbon emissions. This model can be challenging to scale and negatively impacts the environment. A new edge-of-space tourism experience is being proposed as a solution to these problems. Space Perspective is emerging as a shining star in this approach with their Spaceship Neptune™.

Designed to maximize

accessibility, comfort and safety while also being environmentally aware, the Spaceship Neptune is comprised of a SpaceBalloon™, Neptune Capsule, and Reserve Descent System. The mechanics of it are sustainable and eco-friendly. The Spaces

hip is lifted into space by the renewable- hydrogen-powered SpaceBalloon™. It gently rises at 12 mph, clear of g-forces, and free of a carbon footprint. The final key component is the Reserve Descent System, a reserve backup system that can be deployed in case of an emergency affecting the primary system.

SDA Software is a trusted solutions partner for Space Perspective, providing Siemens simulation software solutions and front-line engineering support enabling a reduction in time-to-market and cost, while increasing quality. “SDA Software is a world-class vendor, solutions provider, and true partner in our mission to re-imagine space travel and make it more accessible to the world. The level of service, support, and expertise they provide has been critical in helping us overcome challenges while helping us accelerate our path to commercial operations,” states Royce Fernandes, a Thermal and Fluids Engineer at Space Perspective. SDA Software engineers, such as Alex Scavdahl, assisted with the capsule’s intricate splashdown mechanism. Ted Blowe, SDA Software’s Director of Engineering, provided Royce with extensive engineering support for the thermal sizing of the capsule and advisory recommendations for abstract engineering challenges. The result of this can be seen in the shown thermal Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) image of the capsule.

In addition to Space Perspective’s world-class facilities on NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, they are in the late process of constructing a campus on the Space Coast Spaceport site in Titusville, Florida. It is only independently operated multi-modal space center in the United States. This state-of-the-art facility will be the primary site for their capsule and balloon manufacturing, laboratories, and operations center. Here, Space Perspective’s mission will be aided using SDA Software-provided NX-CAD, Fibersim, STAR-CCM+, and Simcenter 3D structures.

The project’s design process was supported by NX-CAD, an open, flexible, and fully integrated product engineering software delivering fast and realistic conceptual design and modeling. Fibersim has been adopted for the design-build of the composite capsule due to its ability to quickly transition innovative design concepts to the manufacturing floor, especially those involving composite structures. “Critical structures on Spaceship Neptune require composite parts that are meticulously designed and carefully manufactured. Communicating design intent into usable instruction for manufacturing can create risk of delays and poor-quality parts. Fibersim has been the key to bridging this gap in communication, and the results are in. Our composite parts are high quality, and production rates have increased with fewer mistakes,” states Andrew Marshall, one of Space Perspective’s top-notch Structural Design Engineers.  The thermal sizing and CFD analysis can be accredited to STAR-CCM+, a multiphysics CFD simulation software used to emulate real-world conditions. Simcenter 3D structures is being used for the structural analysis portion because of its complex product performance evaluation and efficiency. Through the combination of Space Perspective’s top-notch employees and SDA Software’s provided software and front-line engineering support; Space Perspective, in partnership with SDA Software, is revolutionizing space travel.
